When the young entrepreneur Gustav Ludwig Alsen received official permission in 1862 to enter the cement industry, which was dominated by British competition, long-term economic success was by no means foreseeable. Just one year later, his father Otto Friedrich Alsen had to save the company from bankruptcy. However, thanks to the expertise of capable people such as Heinrich Wessel, who acted as commercial director of the company between 1866 and 1904, Alsen'sche Portland-Cement-Fabrik was quickly expanded into a large corporation.
