Nestled in the fascinating and ancient streets, the Church and Convent of Santa Chiara is right in the heart of Oristano. The Church and Convent of Santa Chiara were built in 1343 by King Peter III. of Arborea built on top of an already existing church dedicated to San Vincenzo and over the years it has managed to keep its appearance almost intact, also thanks to the sheltered location and the care of the Poor Clares nuns.

It is a splendid monument of Gothic architecture that preserves in good condition the facade, the splendid apse and some polychrome trusses of the old monastery. The style of the building traces the patterns of French Gothic, which were also spread in the city by workers led by the Tuscans. Inside, one can admire Gothic consoles supporting the part of the choir known as the choir stage, with male sculptures such as telamons, carved zoomorphic figures and the remains of the wife of one of Arborea's judges. It has a cross vault and a frontal arch on capitals with the Arborense right insignia. Inside, in the apse, the founding magistrates of the monastery are represented, Mariano II Bas Serra, Pietro III. with his wife Costanza di Saluzzo and Mariano IV, father of Eleonora, who completes the work.

Particularly interesting is the fresco of Mariano IV evoking the protection of Santa Chiara for his son Ugone III, below which the marble tablet contains the funerary inscription. Hugh III was one of the greatest judges of Sardinia, who continued the work of his father as a champion of the island's independence: a great soldier, loved and celebrated, he wrote the rules that made the law equal for all revolution, long before the French revolution. He was assassinated on March 3, 1383, after a reign of only seven years, and his death is still shrouded in mystery. Then there is the convent archives which house valuable documents, seals of abbesses and accounting registers from the 15th and 16th centuries which have been exceptional sources for the study of the history of Arborense.
