The Pannenhuis is a farm on the Hoekeinde in Merksplas. It is a former inn and brewery ('De Zwaan'), built in 1654 on one of the old connecting roads between Antwerp and Cologne, near a mudflat in the Mark. In the southern facade are the annual figures '1654' and a gable sign with a cross of sintered brick, as a symbol that itinerant judges held court here.

According to Verdam's 'Middle Dutch Hand Dictionary', a 'panhuus' is a brewery or brewhouse. In those times, the villagers were obliged to brew their beer in the paan house, so that the lord of the village or area knew immediately how much taxes the people owed and had to pay.
