The Chyasalin Mandap is an octangular pavilion in Bhaktapur Durbar Square. The pavilion was constructed by King Srinivas Malla, the then-King of Patan who erected it as a sign of friendship.
The Chyasalin Mandap was destroyed by the earthquake of 1934. As a present by the German Government to the Nepali people it was rebuilt from scratch between 1987-1992 in accordance with historical photographs. Making use of some original pillars and lintels and mostly new woodwork, the pavilion was built from the ground up.
The pavilion was originally built in the 17th century to deflect a powerful force from the nearby Pashupatinath (Yakshyeshwor) Temple. Later it was used by the Malla kings as a meeting place to discuss affairs of the state and the arts. A poetry contest in recorded here on a stone plinth to the pavilions side.
