Dovedale Wood is picturesque woodland that rises steeply from the River Dove. It’s a tough climb through the trees but the rewards are worth it. Rocks and screes which are the result of frost and ice on the high cliffs above the river have developed rare mosses, lichens and flowers. Herons often feed in the quiet northern stretches of the Dove. Trout, dipper, grey wagtail, moorhen and water vole can also be frequently seen.

Dovedale Wood is one of the best woods in the country. Rocks and screes which are the result of frost and ice on the high cliffs above the river have developed rare mosses, lichens and flowers, such as the abundant Herb Robert, and the best grassland has been maintained by sheep grazing. woodlandtrust.org.uk/visiting-woods/woods/dovedale-nnr-dovedale-wood

Access to the wood via either the Bunster Hill path or the path adjacent to Ilam Rock both involve steep ascents. Once you've managed the ascent there are some lovely views along the route and small rocky outcrops that are ideal for taking a breather and absorbing the views across the Dale.
