    The Tauber is a river in southern Germany on both sides of the border between Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. It rises at the west foot of the Frankenhöhe, flows in a northwesterly direction for about 130 km through the Franconia region and flows into the Main from left and southeast in Wertheim.

    Origin story
    The valley line of the Tauber traces an earlier tributary of the Urdonau, which flowed to the southeast against the current flow direction. Parts of today's Mainvierecks also belonged to him. Before the Pleistocene, the Taubertal was wider and flatter. Today's narrow valley was only formed during the cold periods in connection with extensive tectonic elevations. The Taubertal was presumably also included in the valley burial phases of the Main. Even the latest shaping processes in the Taubertal can be read. For example, the St. Achatius chapel in Grünsfeldhausen is now more than three meters below the level of the valley, which can be attributed to the deposition of meadow clay, which increased the valley floor by at least nine meters over the course of several centuries

          Legend from the Taubertal:

          The stingy farmer from Gerlachsheim

          On some days a ghost “das Metzemichele” can be seen in the “Willow rope”. It is said to have lived here as a stingy farmer around 1700. In the Thirty Years' War he took advantage of the need of the poor population and gave a Metz barley for a field. The Lord God punished him for this. After his death, the Metzemichele has to go around to this day and cannot find rest.

          A monk is said to have conspired him in a jug and brought the Metzemichele to Gewann “willow rope”. But even there he finds no rest. People want to have seen him from noon to 1 a.m., but also in the evening. It happens that he ties working farmers to trees and scares them. Then it changes shape, becomes small and then as big as a church tower and disappears back into its jug.
