Crovie is a remarkable old fishing village which came about when families were forced off of inland estates during the clearances. After being moved off the land to make way for the landlords sheep the residents started fishing at their own risk for the benefit of the landowner.
At the peak of the fishing era approximately 50 boats were based in Crovie before a large storm destroyed much of the fleet and many of the houses and fishing sheds in January 1953.
The village is built on a remarkably narrow ledge between the sea and the cliffs much too narrow for cars resulting in foot only access into the village.
Like many places in Scotland your opinion of this unique village will largely depend on the conditions you find it in. In the summer months with little wind and the sun shining it can be a fabulously inviting place. On the other hand should you visit it in high seas with a strong northerly wind you may find it a more intimidating place!
