Ark was established by the decree of the Łomża Voivode in December 1994.

The idea behind its creation was to preserve, almost undisturbed, the Narew river valley with valuable communities of water plants, rushes, peat bogs, meadows and small fragments of riparian forests, and to protect the unique, extremely interestingly shaped relief of this area, created as a result of the Narew river breaking through the Kolno and Wysokomazowiecka plateau. At this point, the Narew, over a dozen-kilometer section of its course, creates a gorge through moraine elevations with an edge zone whose undulating slopes rise to a height of about 40-50 m. This section is also called the Przełomowa Dolina Narew.

The central part, constituting the axis of the Park, is a 16-kilometer section of the river, located between the mouth of the Łojewek River (101 m above sea level) and the bridge connecting the town of Łomża with the village of Piątnica (99 m above sea level).

The first digit of the number corresponds to the province where the route begins, and the next two digits are the route identifier: Warmia-Masuria Province: 101, 102, etc., Podlaskie Province: 201, 202, 203, etc., Lublin Province: 301, 302, 303, etc., Podkarpackie Province: 501, 502, 503, etc., Świętokrzyskie Province: 501, 502, 503, etc.
