The Fornelli prison structure was built in the 1930s as a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients.
Over time it went from an agricultural colony to a maximum security prison in the nefarious 70s and 80s (period in which General Dalla Chiesa indicated it as the institute with the highest security index in Italy). After having therefore been a place of imprisonment for exponents of terrorism, kidnappers of the Sardinian soul, kidnappings and elements of organized crime, the Fornelli prison ceased its function in 1997 and can still be visited today.

Asinara was once a prison island and served as a prisoner of war camp during World War II. Because the swamps had not yet been drained, many prisoners died of malaria. Convicted members of the mafia were held here until 1997.
