At the end of the 19th century, The Isabel Inclined Plane was renamed "The Gonçalves Inclined Plane", after Commander Manuel Francisco Gonçalves, the director of the construction company.
In 1909, the rails were electrified, receiving new European-type carriages with compartments on different steps. In the same year, stations with exterior stairways were built.

Built on the spot where a winching system had been carved into the hillside by the Jesuits in the 17" century, known as the
'Clergy's Crane,* the Gonçalves Streetcar, an ingenious transport system connecting Salvador's Upper and Lower Cities, was inaugurated in 1874. In 1888, it was redesigned, adding a flat floor to facilitate the transportation of live animals. Later, one of the cabins was converted into a street car thereby making it possible to transport passengers. The line was then known as the Chariot.
