Zuylen Chapel

Many walkers and hikers know the romantic chapel in the Bruckdorfer Holz between Alling in the Labertal and the church village of Bergmatting, but few know its existence and history.
The location of the small monument, which is registered in the list of monuments, is in a central location in the forest and is crossed by five developed forest roads.

In 1807, Alexander Freiherr von Vrints-Berberich, Princely Thurn and Tax Councillor and General Post Director, bought the estate of the Minoritenhof monastery in Sinzing. In 1841, he transferred the Minoritenhof estate to his godson Alexander van Zuylen and Nyefelt.

After the death of Baron Vrints-Berberich, Alexander van Zuylen also inherited the large Prüfening castle complex with St. George's Church. The noble van
Nyefelt family, a Flemish family, owned large estates in Belgium and Holland
and had been in the service of the House of Thurn and Taxis since 1660.
Baron Alexander senior died on July 9, 1870 and was buried in the impressive, now listed family crypt in the Dechbetten cemetery in the west of
Regensburg.
The entire property then passed to Alexander junior, the first-born son. He only survived his father for a short time, however, and died on October 25, 1870, of the war year, at the age of just 38 from a sudden hemorrhage.
He was buried in the family crypt next to his father. Franz van Zuylen, the brother, inherited the Minoritenhof estate with its extensive fields and forest lands after a detailed examination of inheritance law. Out of gratitude, Franz built this chapel for his brother in 1872 at the most central point of his forest, where all the roads to the surrounding towns crossed.

A memorial plaque on the altar table of the chapel commemorates this with the following inscription:

"Dedicated to the memory of his dear brother Alexander by Franz van Zuylen

Neyfert. MDCCLXXII".

The chapel was repaired over decades by the Strauss family from Bruckdorf

and decorated with flowers and candles for celebrations, cleaned and maintained.
