These animals are bred back from the extinct aurochs, which were widespread in Eurasia and North Africa during the Ice Age. Today's aurochs were bred back from various primitive cattle breeds such as the Spanish fighting cattle, Corsican cattle and Scottish Highland cattle.

In the Betzenberg wildlife park you can observe the aurochs in spacious enclosures. The park offers numerous hiking trails that lead past the enclosures and give you the opportunity to see the animals in their natural environment.

"All domestic cattle breeds on earth go back to the Ur. During the Ice Age it was widespread in Eurasia and North Africa. It was extinct as a wild species in 1627. We know exactly what it looked like from illustrations and contemporary descriptions of bone finds as well as from cave paintings from the Stone Age .
Today's aurochs is a back-breeding from various primitive cattle breeds. (Spanish fighting cattle, Corsican cattle, Scottish highland cattle, etc.)"
