The Gerhart-Hauptmann-Gymnasium Wismar (GHG for short) is a public high school in the city center of Wismar in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania that emerged from a boys' elementary school founded in 1905. During the years of the GDR, the listed building housed a polytechnic high school. Since 1992, the educational institution has been the second high school in Wismar, alongside the large city school.
The listed building of today's Gerhart-Hauptmann-Gymnasium, built in neo-Gothic style with red clinker brick cladding, was built as a boys' elementary school on Dahlmannstrasse from 1903 to 1905 as part of a comprehensive renovation of the city's school infrastructure according to the plans of the Wismar architect Johannes Busch. After the school began operating in 1905, it was divided into seven classes. By 1908, 922 students were already attending the educational institution.
The name was chosen in honor of the German playwright and writer Gerhart Hauptmann (1862–1946). He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1912.
