Parking Kanaalzone is one of the two car parks on the edge of Oud-Rekem, but it is more than just a parking space as a starting point for many walks, its beautiful location on the water and the old village and, above all, a pack of information boards and points of interest for you even starting your walk.

The canal here is called the Zuid-Willemsvaart. This canal was dug during the reign of King William I (1822-1825). Digging the canal brought a lot of activity and therefore prosperity to Reckheim. The Zuid-Willemsvaart lies parallel to the Maas and connects Maastricht with 's-Hertogenbosch. Until the widening of the canal in 1934, there was a swing bridge at this location that connected Rekem with Uikhoven. The house on the other side is the former "Hotel Du Pont". The swing bridge was replaced by the current fixed bridge 150m south. The construction of this bridge meant an economic decline for Oud-Rekem, because traffic no longer passed through the center.

The Zuid-Willemsvaart runs from Maastricht to 's-Hertogenbosch. The canal is a shorter route for shipping between the Belgian and Brabant/Gelderland parts of the Maas.
It is also one of the quieter places in Oud Rekem where you can relax.
There is a motorhome parking space right next to the bridge on the canal.
