In the wooden fence that surrounds the car park there are open steps to enter the cattle meadows that are around the refuge and connect with the hiking trails. The GR-12 posts are at the back of the building. In fact, the circular route of the GR-12 can be done in both directions, our route follows the anti-clockwise direction to finish descending and make the hardest and steepest section of the climb. The trail is spectacular from the first steps, it runs through the beautiful meadows of Eskilzarra and crosses the narrow Paso de Zemeto, a passageway between two limestone walls with a fantastic exit over the forests of Rincón de Belagua and a magnificent view of the head of the Valle del Roncal. At this point, the local path SL IS-4 comes out to the right, which returns to the refuge, and the GR-12 turns to the left through a valley of giant beeches that climbs towards the limestone reliefs of Lazagorria.
