The chapel was mentioned in a document as early as 1162.
According to tradition, the wells around the chapel should form a pentagram that is completed by underground passages.
There are all sorts of myths about the Chapel in Pollingsried, according to which ghosts are at work here, especially on full moon nights.
One of the myths is about a girl who was violently killed by the pastor at the time in 1625 and was dumped in a well. A black dog - the girl's loyal companion - waited howling for days in front of the well, until the pastor went to the chapel and was attacked there by the dog as a just punishment.
Another story tells of the victims of the plague in the 17th century that corpses were also thrown into the well.
After that - strictly speaking, as far as the chapel bells could be heard - no one died of the disease.
All nonsense?
Only 4 of the 5 wells mentioned in the legends can be seen. The existence of the 5th Devil's Well could never be proven. Human remains have never been found in the well.
The chapel is definitely worth a visit.
