Corte is the historical and cultural capital of Corsica. It was on the initiative of Pascal Paoli (one of the most famous people on the island) that this city in November 1775 was chosen as the capital of independent Corsica. In doing so, Corsica separated itself from the Republic of Genoa. You can learn even more about the history by visiting the Corsican Museum which is located within the city's citadel. Corte is amazing, because as soon as you leave the city, you immediately find yourself surrounded by nature.
