The border between North Macedonia and Greece runs through the middle of Lake Doirani. While the North Macedonian side has stony and rather steep shores and also has a bathing resort (Dojran), the Greek edge of the lake is very flat, heavily overgrown and rather unapproachable. A lot of reeds, rotting water and lots of animals do not invite you to swim here, but it is an Eldorado for anglers and bird watchers. Pelicans are said to have been sighted, but this is rather rare, as those passing through feel more comfortable at the nearby Kerkinisee.
