Atajate is the smallest town in the province of Malaga, with no more and no less than about 180 inhabitants. It is located between the Guadiaro and Genal valleys, in the Serranía de Ronda.
Atajate was famous for its vineyards and its economy was based mainly on the production of must. However, at the end of the 19th century there was an epidemic called phylloxera that wiped out all the vineyards and brought ruin to the inhabitants. Nowadays, although there are not so many wineries left, the must is still very representative of Atajate.
