Ransdorp once had more ships than Amsterdam. That was around 1545. At that time, Ransdorp was even a period richer than Amsterdam. Rich people, such as skippers and shipping entrepreneurs, also lived in the village. You can see that in the wooden houses, bell-shaped farms, an own brewery and the large church with richly decorated blunt tower. You can still recognize Ransdorp by far from that tower. In the summer months the tower is open daily (except Monday) from 11 am to 5 pm and you can climb on top of it and enjoy the view over Amsterdam and Waterland as the area is called, see ransdorpertoren.nl. Greetje Dircx, the housekeeper and later mistress of Rembrandt, lived in this village. After the umpteenth flood in 1916, the village was no longer able to pay for the damage and it was incorporated into Amsterdam.

From 1619, six villages from the area united in the Union of Waterland. Ransdorp was the most important village and the town hall was also built here. That is still opposite to the church and the unanimity is reflected in a weapon and the saying: Eendracht makes cleyne saecken bloeyen in power and also in groeyen. The accompanying weapon: a swan with a gold collar and six arrows in its leg for the six villages. And you can see the weapon in the classic hotel De Zwaan. Classic in design. With a billiard in the middle of the room. And with typical Dutch items such as minced meat on the menu, sandwiches, bouncer, bitterballen and pea soup.

Greetje Dircx, Rembrandt's housekeeper and later mistress, also lived in this village.
