The bridge is 252 metres long and 26 metres wide. It crosses the Thames with seven wrought iron arches. The external cast iron arch elements, which are used as cladding, have neo-Gothic decorations by Charles Barry, the architect of the Palace of Westminster. The bridge is painted green, which matches the colour of the leather chairs in the House of Commons, whose chamber faces Westminster Bridge. The Lambeth Bridge, on the other hand, is painted red, which matches the colour of the House of Lords.
