Natural monument Hangenstein a jewel in the Thayatal

The approx. 1 km long stretch of river on the south-eastern outskirts of Karlstein/Thaya was declared a natural monument because of its ecological diversity. This was achieved in December 2008 on the initiative of the Friends of the Thaya Valley association.

For a better understanding of the population, a river educational trail with currently 16 display boards was set up in this area. During a walk along the flood protection dam, you have the opportunity to learn more about the water, aquatic animals, wild herbs, the "Hangenstein legend" and much more.

This walk is also signposted as a hiking trail (No. 54 - themed trail "Natural Monument Hangenstein").
