Beek was first mentioned in 1155 and is named after the Abeek that flows north of Beek.

Before 1007, like Bree, Beek belonged to the domain of Britte, which was owned by Count Ansfried, founder of Thorn Abbey. This domain was split after 1007, whereby Beek continued to belong to the aforementioned Abbey. The custody of the goods eventually passed to the Earl of Loon. The church was probably founded by the Abbey and was initially a daughter church of the one in Kessenich. In 1741, the Mariëndal hermits came from Bree to Beek, where they cared for the mentally ill. The vault was lifted in the French era, at the end of the 18th century.

Administratively, Beek belonged to the Vier Crispelen, a mini-state consisting of Bree and a few surrounding villages (the buitinge of Bree). Jurisdiction was spoken by Bree's aldermen for the rural area, the Buitenbank.

At the Battle of Sint-Nicolaasdag 1648, Beek lost 12 civilians. The Lorraine troops were in the vicinity of Beek in 1650. Further military operations at Beek are comparable to those at Bree.

Today, Beek is almost attached to the basin of Bree.
