In October 2022, the Corona memorial "A young forest of willows" was inaugurated in Wittelsbacher Park in Augsburg. This work of art, designed by the artists Mona Schafitel and Sascha Kempter, was created in collaboration with students from the Agnes Bernauer Secondary School, the St. Ursula Girls' Secondary School and the Rudolf Diesel High School. It reflects the experiences and emotions of young people during the Corona pandemic.
The memorial consists of willow cuttings, into the bark of which the young people have carved poems, symbols and personal messages. Flags with wishes for the future are hung between the willows, blowing in the wind and symbolizing the hopes of the young generation.
Unfortunately, the memorial was damaged by vandalism in January 2023. Unknown persons tore flags from the trees and damaged the willows, causing property damage of around 5,000 euros. The Augsburg South police are asking witnesses who noticed anything suspicious during the crime to call 0821/323-2710.
The Corona Memorial in Wittelsbacher Park serves as a place of remembrance and reflection on the effects of the pandemic, especially on the younger generation. It invites visitors to pause and reflect on the experiences and hopes of young people.
