In Haarlem the first railway station was built in 1839 as one of 3 railway stations.

The original station building in the city center was replaced in 1906-1908 by a new building by Dirk Margadant on the now elevated railway line. Characteristic are the two different entry and exit buildings as well as the location of the waiting rooms and the restaurant on the island platform. It is the only train station in the Netherlands built in the Art Nouveau style and one of the most striking buildings in the city of Haarlem. The building is furnished with numerous tile panels.
