Around 1300 monks walked from the monastery in Aduard to the monastery in Vries. On the way they passed the place where the Lookout Tower now stands. Because this area was a bit higher, it was an excellent place to take a break.

Around 1300 monks already walked through this swamp area, from the monastery in Aduard to the church in the village of Vries. According to tradition, they often paused at a higher sand head that jutted out above the swamp. There would have been a statue at this point at the time and that is why the watchtower that now stands on this spot has been given the name 'The Statue'.
The specially designed watchtower was built in 2018 from wood and steel. The tower is 26 meters high and has about 120 steps.
