Ptuj, in German Pettau, looks back on a settlement history dating back thousands of years. People settled here on the banks of the Drau in the Neolithic Age, but under Roman rule the first heyday began as a trading town. In the Middle Ages, the city flourished due to its excellent location on the trade route between Venice and Hungary.
Even today you can guess the wealth of the time during a foray through the old town. A visit to the impressive castle complex is particularly worthwhile. There is a museum here and from the wall you have a wonderful view of the city, the Draustausee and the surrounding landscape.
