According to tradition, Arbogast lived in the seventh century as a hermit in the forest of Haguenau, near a large oak tree. His exemplary way of life led to his appointment as Bishop of Strasbourg. In fact, Arbogast can be considered an important force in the Christianization of the Alemanni. So he founded in Surbourg the first Alsatian monastery, in Strasbourg he had the church dedicated to Mary on the site of today's cathedral magnify. But he probably never lived in the forest of Hagenau. In fact, towards the end of the Middle Ages, hermits settled in the forest called "La Forêt Sainte" and near the "Gros chêne", the big oak tree.

The large oak tree, which stood here for several hundred years, fell to the ground in 1913, struck by lightning. Your stump is protected by a small metal roof today. The memorial stone dates from the 19th century, the Arbogast chapel from 1955.
