    The oldest conifer in the Franconian Forest, the 900-year-old “Yew from the Breitengrund”, stands at around 470 meters on the eastern slope of the Thiemitztal. Its origins go back to the time of Friedrich Barbarossa, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. Bears and wolves lived in the immeasurable solitude of the old "northern forest". The "Yew from the Breitengrund" is about 8 meters high and has a circumference of 3.50 meters in the lower third.

      At Gößweinstein there are still some yew trees to be found on the slope to the Wiesenttal. There are still individual stands of yew trees in the Rhön. The yew trees were mercilessly fought by the farmers who used to graze in the forest in earlier times. It happened again and again that the farmer found dead animals that had eaten from the yew trees. That's why you can hardly find yew trees in the Franconian Forest.
      It looks very different in some gardens today. The taxus is a popular ornamental wood, probably because it does not grow that high.
      Yew trees are very poisonous. The poison is called taxol and is used in medicine as a cancer agent.
