Aerwinkel Castle in Posterholt, Limburg, was first mentioned in 1544, and was probably a farm. It is not known when the house disappeared at that time. In 1854, the current country house was built by Pierre Cuypers on behalf of P.M. Geradts. This country house has the status of a national monument.

Aerwinkel Castle, a jewel in the middle of a majestic English landscape garden with monumental native trees, was the first major work by Pierre Cuypers. The city architect of Roermond, only 27 years old, was commissioned by the wealthy lawyer Pierre Geradts, a member of a family of merchants and lawyers. Geradts lived in Hasselt, Belgium, our guide tells us. He became a judge in Roermond and wanted to move here with his family.

When the municipality demanded replanting, he quickly sold everything . . to the Sisters of Divine Providence.

Sisters of Divine Providence turned the castle and outbuildings into a convalescent home for patients from their own Maasland Hospital in Sittard. They have lived and worked here for 33 years.
The municipality of Ambt Montfort then bought it as a temporary town hall. They wanted to build a new home for the three merged municipalities of Posterholt, Montfort and Sint Odiliënberg. They used the main building for council meetings and as a wedding venue. Nothing more.
