The Porta d'Oro (or Porta Vecchia) is the only one left of the six gates that allowed access to the city of Naro in the medieval period. The gate was built together with the city walls, which delimited a rhomboidal area, in 1263. In 1482 the walls were restored but in the eighteenth century, the defensive functions ceased, they were gradually destroyed. The golden door represents one of the few stretches of the walls that have remained almost intact to this day. Its name derives from the presence of customs and the consequent wealth coming from the trades of the Jews of the local Jewish community who had their ghetto right near this gate and from the large quantity of wheat that, coming from the countryside below, entered the city through this gate. .
