The weigh house was put into use in 1478. Here the incoming goods had to be weighed for city taxes. [1] [2] The tenant also had a monopoly over the sale of foreign beers in the city, which is why the building was also used as a city beer house / pub. A restoration was carried out between 1947 and 1949, based on old indications. The architect who completed the construction was N. De Wolf.

According to the Guinness Book of Records, this would be the oldest in use catering establishment in the Netherlands. However, there are sources that state that the tavern 't Goude Hooft in The Hague already existed in 1423.

The monument was designed by Jan Wolkers. This writer and artist is known as the designer of more monuments, such as the flood monument in Kruiningen and the Auschwitz monument on the dike at Ceres on Texel.

Column

Almost the entire monument is made of glass. It consists of two glass columns. Six times a number of glass triangles have been placed on both pillars, which together have the shape of the spread wings of a bird.

Sarcophagus and clock

In front of the two glass columns is a hole in the ground, which is covered with a glass plate. In this “sarcophagus” lies the original 16th century clock, which came down during the blowing up of the tower. On the glass plate covering the sarcophagus is the text:

"When the clock stopped, the birds of freedom appeared"

The small square that was traditionally called Vischmarkt, but was gradually called Roggepleintje by many, has been restored. A beautifully enamelled street sign with the name Vischmarkt had been put back on the wall of the town hall and was unveiled by councilor Fred Jansen. As far as the books could be found, this place has been called Vischmarkt since 1400. Fish used to be traded on this square on Fridays. Now there can be no more misunderstanding and confusion as to whether Roggepleintje or Vischmarkt should be.
