Gletsch exudes a particularly nostalgic charm with its imposing buildings, which are long past their prime. The settlement consists roughly of the Hotel Glacier du Rhône, a train station, a former gas station, and an Anglican chapel. The hotel experienced its heyday in the later Belle Époque era, when it offered 320 guest beds.

Gletsch lies at an altitude of 1,759 meters at the junction of the mountain roads to the Furka and Grimsel passes, making it an important transit station for Alpine traffic and a horse-changing station.

History in every building

Gletsch was one of the cradles of tourism in the Alps. The village was reached on foot, by mule, by carriage, and later by train and automobile. The first inn was built here in 1830. 150 years ago, the grand hotels Glacier du Rhône and Belvédère followed on the pass roads. Hardly any other place in Goms offers so much to see in such a small area.

During the summer months, you can learn about the region at the Gletsch InfoPoint, operated by the IG Region Gletsch. The InfoPoint is currently being renovated and is expected to reopen in mid-August 2023.
