Large heath, small bushes
The Cuxhaven coastal heath is the largest contiguous heathland on the mainland of the German North Sea coast. Directly behind the Geest, a mosaic of extensive heaths, lean grasslands, small heather moors and oak scrub forests stretches close to the coast. Many dwarf shrubs such as crowberry and bell heather grow here.

The formation of the heath
The large-scale expansion of the heaths only began in the Middle Ages. The high demand for wood for dike and shipbuilding as well as settlement in the wood-poor marshes, "eternal rye cultivation" and the effects of the existing feudal system caused the large-scale desolation of the landscape.

The coastal heathland has developed into a new tourist attraction in recent years. It stretches from Cuxhaven-Duhnen, Holte-Spangen, Berensch-Arensch, to Oxstedt, adjacent to the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site, and is unique in its character and extent.

Extensive heathland landscapes of crowberry, heather, sandy grasslands, heather moors, and scrub forests have been preserved on the coastal geest. It is the largest contiguous heathland on the mainland of the German North Sea coast.

Beautiful hiking and riding trails lead through the coastal heathland.
