Memorial stone for Arthur Engel who fell on this location on September 4, 1914.
Historical facts:
On September 4, 1914, the German army launches a first heavy attack on Fortress Antwerp. German troops want to cross the Scheldt in Dendermonde. At the same time, Forts Breendonk and Liezele are also attacked. With this the German army wants to prevent the Belgians from coming to the aid of Ros Beiaardstad. By midday all Belgian troops have been pushed back behind the forts line. In the afternoon of September 4, the German infantry attacks again. Part of the German troops is led by Hauptmann Arthur Engel of the 35th Reserve Infantry Regiment. The Germans end up in a hail of bullets and shells from the forts. Dozens of soldiers are mowed away, including Arthur Engel. He stays behind in the barbed wire. His widow has this memorial erected for him in his memory.
