The Mother Church is one of the oldest buildings in Santo Stefano Quisquina: in fact it was founded 500 years ago by Federico Chiaramonte. A restoration of the Church is underway at this time. Although from the outside it doesn't show much beauty, the inside is quite rich and decorated. I recommend everyone to visit this church.

The Mother Church of S. Stefano was founded in the 14th century by the will of the powerful Federico Chiaramonte and was dedicated to S. Nicola di Bari. Its transformation accompanied the development of the town. Even the name was changed, for a long time, to S. Maria dell’Itria due to the particular veneration it had in Sicily. The first works of art of which we have news and documentation date back to the fifteenth century, of undoubted artistic and historical interest. The painting of the three protectors of the town dates back to 1464 (S. Stefano protomartire, Madonna della Catena and S. Rosalia). The latter documents the cult of the Saint prior to the invention of bones on the pilgrim mountain and the Quisquina cave (1624). Since September 1625, the bust of Argento depicting Santa Rosalia with the relics that are kept in a reliquary is preserved in the Matrix. In 700 Giuseppe Emanuele Ventimiglia prince of Belmonte with his own donations and the donations of the people, under the direction of P. Ignazio Traina, fine architect, rebuilt and restored the Mother Church. The brothers Manno Antonino and Vincenzo, artists from Palermo, painted the frescoes that embellish the presbytery and some canvases placed in the side altars. In the central chapel dominates the beautiful "wooden crucifix", a gift from the prince of Belmonte. On 4 September 1774 the Bishop of Agrigento Antonino Lancea consecrated the Mother Church with a solemn rite, dedicating it to the Saints: Nicola, Giuseppe and Rosalia. Other paintings were placed in the Mother Church. The resurrection of Lazarus and the Emmaus Supper by an unknown author deserve particular attention. At the end of the 19th century Federico Panepinto, a Stefano artist, painted the canvases of the martyrdom of San Lorenzo and the massacre of the Innocents. In the side chapels there are statues (wooden sculptures) of St. Joseph, of the Immaculate Conception. of S. Stefano protomartire and of the Addolorata by F. Pennino. Precious is the baptismal font where Giacinto Ansalone was baptized on November 1, 1598. Many works were carried out by the Archpriest Mons. Luigi Abella during his long pastoral ministry (1932 to 1968). In addition to the restoration work, he was responsible for the reconstruction of the bell tower, the rectory and the premises of the Assuntine nuns. The adjacent church of St. Francis de Sales, better known as the Oratory of the Five Wounds, is one of the oldest churches in the country (built in 1580); inside, paintings by the Manno and fine stuccoes.
