The family of those von Gladbach is mentioned as early as 1102. This family is related to the Counts of Jülich and took the castle and rule from them as a fief. Through various inheritances she came to Maria von Kronenburg in 1373. After further changes of ownership, the water castle and rule came to the von Palant family. The sex died out in Gladbach in 1725 in the male line. Franz Kaspar von Hillesheim became the successor.
