Very soon after the beginning of industrialization, the mines and the flourishing heavy industry in cities such as Herne, Gelsenkirchen and Essen lacked an economic transport route. Construction of the RHK began in 1909.
The Emscher was artificially laid back then and today runs for long stretches directly parallel to the canal, which overcomes a height difference of approx. 36m over a length of 45 km.
