The founding of the Sandhorst Mill Association

On May 5, 1986 at 8 p.m., 20 residents met in the Sandhorster Krug for the founding meeting of the association for the preservation of the Sandhorst Mill.

The history of the Sandhorst Mill

The master builder was the mill builder Mönk from Großefehn; a detailed invoice for the total sum of 15,475.74 marks is still available. The Sandhorst Mill was a two-story gallery mill covered with cardboard with a compass rose and louvre blades. The mill had two grinding mills, one milling mill with a diameter of 1.50 m and one with a diameter of 1.60 m. The miller and baker Reiner Meenken used the mill exclusively for grinding grain, for his own bakery business in the house and for contract work for the surrounding farmers. In 1936, a shed was added, which served as a grain store and for cleaning grain; the slowly developing rural trade also had its origins there.

In 1941, a new axle was installed and a blade replaced; the second blade was replaced in 1957.
