Between 1893 and 1900, the trail you are now hiking on was a busy train track that was used by the Great Northern Railway. To get up the 3.5 % grade, the train had to go up the mountain in switchbacks. This old railroad track was abandonded when the Cascade Tunnel was opened and the switchbacks became obsolete. This is also the beginning/end of Section K on the Pacific Crest Trail which is considered to be among the hardest sections of the long-distance trail.
