If you wish to follow physical distancing guidelines try to walk or ride the Manly to Shelley Beach pathway during the week. Weekends are crowded.
Also along the Manly beachfront, if walking take the pathway next to the retaining wall instead of the shared walking/cycle path and give cyclists plenty of space.
The former monastery gardens are worth the walk and provide scenic coastal views - a former PM once trained here.

Manly Beach is one of Australia's most famous surfing beaches—home to the first World Surfing Championships in 1964. With its tree-lined promenade and long stretch of fine, soft sand, it's a popular destination for backpackers and families.

For a great day trip, take a ferry from Circular Quay, near the Sydney Opera House, and cross Sydney Harbour toward Manly Wharf (30 minutes). From the wharf, walk to The Corso, a lively shopping and pedestrian promenade that leads to Manly Beach.

At the northern end of the beach is the Queenscliff Headland, where an underwater reef (also called a "bombora") creates the special type of waves so prized by top surfers. A short walk from The Corso takes you to pretty Shelly Beach—a sheltered area popular for snorkeling, diving, barbecues, and picnics.

Dive Centre Manly offers diving courses for beginners as well as guided dive tours for certified divers. If you'd like to take surfing lessons, enroll at the Manly Surf School. Accommodation options in Manly range from luxury hotels to youth and backpacker hostels.

Explore the coast by cycling from Manly, heading north to Freshwater Beach, the historic home of Australian surf culture. Both Manly and Freshwater are listed as important surfing beaches on the National Surfing Reserves list.
