Witch was first mentioned as Herxe (1174) and has been known as Hex from the 16th century. This municipality in Droog-Haspengouw has as its highest points the wooded Zalenberg (120 meters) and the Magneebos (115 meters) in the east of the municipality, and as its lowest part the humid valley of the Herkebeek (65 meters) in the hamlet of Broek in the West; the southeastern part is occupied by fields. The municipality is characterized by two forest complexes, which are large for Flanders, the Heks forest, around the castle, which includes the Zalenberg, and the Magneebos, in the northeast, adjoining the Manshovenbos; Both last forests are centuries-old oak and beech forests, probably remnants of a much larger forest complex, and part of the hunting area that Prince Bishop de Velbrück acquired in this region around his hunting pavilion. This zone is virtually undeveloped, which is quite unique in Flanders, with exceptional scenic beauty for Flanders: strong old forest edges, relief, vistas, meadows, hedges and important sunken roads.

The somewhat strange place name was first mentioned in 1174 as Herxe, and then also Hekes (1379) and Hexe (1379). From the 16th century it was spelled Hex, and from 1943 it became Witch. The meaning is not clear. One thinks of a Celtic river name or of the Germanic heg (hedge, fence).
