Genesis, the Young Olav
A giant youth emerging from a pool of water at St. Marie Plass is a site-specific landmark in Sarpsborg, Norway. It references the city's founding father while also acknowledging the continuous development and redefinition that cities and nations must undergo in anticipation of the future. The specificity of Finn Eirik Modahl's Genesis, combined with its universal aspects and striking presence, gives it lasting appeal.

The millennium sculpture "Genesis" by artist Finn Eirik Modahl was inaugurated by King Harald V on 29 July 2016 for Sarpsborg's millennium celebrations. The artwork refers to the founder of the city of Sarpsborg Olav the Saint and to the water. A young man of the present time is shown with a view into the future, emerging from the water. The 5 m high bust of Olav is made of reflective steel, in which everyone can reflect themselves.
