The former Kühnring Castle was the ancestral seat of the Kuenringer family.

In the first half of the 12th century, Hadmar I built the ancestral castle of the Kuenringers on the spot where the parish church of Kühnring stands today, after his grandfather Azzo von Gobatsburg had already built a chapel here at the end of the 11th century, which was commissioned by Bishop Altmann was consecrated by Passau and later served as a castle chapel. After the castle was destroyed, it was rededicated as a parish church and rebuilt several times, some significantly. When it was rebuilt in 1660, it finally got its current appearance.

Only a few large parts of the wall and part of the moat still bear witness to the former castle complex.
