A bridge over the Roer was mentioned for the first time in 1348. Further information about this bridge is missing. In 1653 there would have been a bridge made of Namur stone. In 1726, however, the city of Roermond had two brick kilns built for the construction of a stone bridge. In 1755 this bridge was inspected by the Maastricht city architect Tilman Keerens. Then it turned out that the pavement had subsided over the second arch as one entered the city. In January 1764 the condition of the bridge was so bad that it was decided to completely rebuild it.

The new bridge was built from Namur stone. The cornerstone was laid on 17 June 1771. The first stone, inscribed "Neoconditus" (rebuilt), was 11 inches by 11 inches, according to the Roermond Chronicle, and was placed in the center of the last pillar on the other side. Maria Theresia donated the bridge to the city. The new bridge is equipped with icebreakers and since there was still shipping on the Roer in 1771, the central arches are higher than the outer ones. The bridge was badly damaged during World War II. It was only restored in 1955 and the provisional outer bailey bridge cleared. Every year on Shrove Tuesday since the mid-20th century, a life-size puppet of the Greek god Bacchus has been thrown into the helm from the stone bridge. This is called Bacchusdrieve in Limburgish.

The bridge was severely damaged during the Second World War. It was not until 1955 that it was restored and the temporary Bailey bridge was cleared away.
