#12 - Jules Verne as a playwright

My literary career began with the theatre. Between 1848 and 1860, alone or with others (Dumas junior, Michel Carré, Charles Wallut), I wrote about thirty plays. Eight of these will be performed at the Théâtre Lyrique. When I turned to the novel in 1862, I continued to write for the stage. Then, with Adolphe D'Ennery, I adapted some of my novels, notably Around the World in Eighty Days (1874) and Michel Strogoff (1880), which were made into plays with great spectacle and special effects.
Since my arrival in Amiens in 1871 I have been going to the theater regularly. As early as 1883, I belonged to a ten-person "regulars' table" that decided on the engagements of the actors. After election to the municipal council in 1888, I became more involved in the affairs of the theater and wrote a dozen annual reports on its activities.
As a councilman, I often go to the theater with my wife, Honorine. I can even attend performances of my own plays: the adaptations of Around the World in Eighty Days (1877 and 1880) and Michel Strogoff (1882, 1893 and 1900), but also my early works like Eleven Days Siege (1880) and Ein Nephew from America (1888).
