The mosaic mackerel sculpture is a 15-foot-long artwork made by Rosalind Waites in 1996. It is part of the Uist Sculpture Trail, a series of seven commissioned works by artists that are located in various places across the Uists and Benbecula. The sculpture is made from locally found materials on the shore at Lochmaddy, such as quartz, basalt rock, mussel shells, and worn down coloured glass. It reflects the importance of mackerel and fish in general to the economy and heritage of the area. You can find the sculpture on the shore by Taigh Chearsabhagh Museum and Art Centre at Lochmaddy.
