In this area of the ALter Sorge loop there are areas of land that have to be drained at 2.5 m below normal zero. That is why locks and pumps are used for drainage purposes. The area around the Alten Sorge loop is drained via the Große with Schlote, Neue Schlote and Alte Schlote to the Eider.
The lock keeper's house, the chimney lock built in 1877 (directly to the Eider), the pumping station with the pumps (the larger building) and the old lock are cultural monuments in Stapel.

The old stone sluice from 1619 is not the pumping station, but the nearby old sluice leading through a dike. The old lock got its name from being one of the first brick structures in the area. It is the oldest hydraulic structure in the area, built by Dutch specialists.
If you drive towards the pumping station, turn left before the dyke and past the farm into the dead end. It's worth taking a look over the dike to see the connection.
