Together with the almost 90-year-old stork fountain and the many surrounding half-timbered houses, the market square in Gerstungen is definitely worth a visit. One of the richly decorated half-timbered buildings stands where the Kemenate, the stone residential tower of Melchior Rudolph von Boyneburg, was demolished in 1700. The ancestral castle of the von Boyneburg family was in the Ringgau on the ridge near Sontra-Wichmannshausen, and it was abandoned as a residence at the end of the 15th century.

The market square of Gerstungen is the center and offers numerous beautifully decorated half-timbered facades and the stork fountain as well as a good place for cyclists to stop for refreshments (bakery). On Thursdays, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., a market day with regional products is held here.
