The cross takes its name from the ruins of an Arab defensive tower ("watchtower") that existed in the same place and now lies under the cement base of the Cross. It was one of the many defensive towers whose remains are repeated throughout the Alhama valley and which were reconquered by the Castilians in the 12th century. The current stone cross dates back to 1973, when the previous wooden one that existed since 1908 was replaced.
